Remembering the Fallen: on this day in 1989, Lance Corporal Steven Wilson, Private Donald Macauley and Private Matthew Marshall, 3rd Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, were killed near Mayobridge in County Down, Northern Ireland.

They were travelling in an army Land Rover on the Drumlough Road, part of a two-vehicle patrol, when a bomb was detonated, killing them and seriously injuring another soldier, who survived. The killers escaped on a stolen motorcycle. At the inquest, the coroner stated that the killing was “an appalling act of savagery carried out by men motivated by the hatred of the past…the IRA continue to do it the way they have always done it: by unspeakably violent murder, intimidation, and indiscriminate destruction of property.”

Steven, born in Portsmouth, was 23 years old and married. Donald, from Liverpool, was 20 years old and engaged to be married. Matthew, from Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire, was 21 years old.
