Lieutenant Andrew Robert Chesterman, 3rd Battalion The Rifles

Remembering the Fallen: on this day in 2012 Lieutenant Andrew Robert Chesterman from 3rd Battalion The Rifles was killed in Afghanistan. He was commanding a vehicle patrol in the Nad ‘Ali district of Helmand province when the lead vehicle struck an IED. As he moved forward to take control of the situation the patrol was attacked by insurgent small arms fire and he was fatally wounded. Despite the best efforts of his fellow Riflemen, the Medical Emergency Response Team and hospital staff, Lieutenant Chesterman could not be saved. He deployed to Helmand province in 2012, and worked in the Nad ‘Ali district as part of the 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment Battle Group, then was given a new task of forming a Police Advisory Team, working for the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards Battle Group. From the government fatalities notice: "Lieutenant Chesterman was quite simply an exceptional Rifles officer. He was popular, utterly professional, dependable and naturally gifted. Through his inspiring leadership he had earned the respect of his fellow Riflemen on operations under the toughest of circumstances. He had a very bright future ahead of him. His authoritative leadership and determined approach would have carried him far. The swiftest and boldest of Riflemen, he will never be forgotten." Andrew, from Guildford, was 26 years old.
