Appeal for mourners to attend war hero's funeral

Harry Wheeler, 96, died in Macclesfield care home on Monday (May 8). With no surviving family, friends are calling for people to attend his funeral.

Friends of a 96-year-old war hero have launched an appeal for mourners to attend his funeral.

Harry Wheeler died at a care home in Macclesfield on Monday (May 8) but doesn’t have any family.

He served in the Royal Marines during the Second World War and served some time in Italy.

Harry’s only family, his wife Enid and daughter Susan, died some years ago.

Now a friend of the war veteran is asking the community to help say farewell to Harry at his funeral on May 18.

A friend said: “Harry was a real character. He had a sparkle in his eyes and a wicked sense of humour. He was also a terrible flirt, could be stubborn as a mule, but was very gentle and kind-natured. He adored his wife and daughter, but both of them passed away years ago.

“He has no one to mourn him - not a soul in the world. It would be lovely if people could support us and give him a great send off.”

Harry, a master carpenter, lived and worked in and around Wilmslow all his life.

He was a keen gardener and loved crown green bowling.

Harry lived independently at his home in Lacey Green until two years ago before moving to a Ashfields care home on Prestbury Road, Macclesfield.

Paying tribute, Ellen Newall, deputy manager, said: “Although Harry was only with us for a few years he made a lot of friends and we will miss him. He loved it here. I will always remember him as a very comical and funny man.

“A few of us will be going to his funeral and I hope a few more can make it. He deserves a nice send off.”

His funeral is taking place at Macclesfield Crematorium on Thursday May 18, at 10.40am.
